At first glance, the new Acer Aspire 1520 looks quite elegant, with its polished metallic veneer and sexy logo nicely etched on the lid. It also feels good in your hands-at 7.9 pounds it's one of the lighter desktop replacement notebooks around. But, as the saying goes, good looks only get you so far, and in the end, the Aspire 1520 feels kind of shallow.

From a design perspective, the Acer Aspire is a looker, with a smooth finish and rounded corners. The two-tone silver and black color scheme is also a nice touch. We also like the DVD burner and four-in-one memory card reader, features you don't usually find at this price.

Opening up the notebook reveals one of the weakest areas of the 1520: the keyboard and button layout. It's a shame to have such a good-looking exterior and be left with run-of-the-mill buttons that have no substance to them at all. All of the primary function buttons are not only on the small side, but incredibly flimsy to the touch. The keyboard's tactile feedback wasn't the greatest, either. Compared to other notebook keyboards, the 1520's just felt cheap.

The Aspire 1520 is powered by an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor, specifically designed for full-sized notebooks. Although we have no qualms about the processor, we have issues with the 1520's other components. Even though the 80GB hard drive is a good size for a notebook, it runs at a leisurely 4,200 rpm. As a result, the Aspire 1520 scored a below-average 2709 in our PCMark04 tests.

Graphics for the Aspire 1520 come courtesy of a Via/S3G UniChrome 2 Pro IGP adapter-not the most exciting of video cards. Needless to say, with only 64MB of video memory, you won't be playing any of the latest games on this notebook. With a dismal 3DMark2001 score of 1802, you're pretty much limited to casual online games and solitaire.

Another weak spot on the 1520 is the sound quality. With only one small speaker at the base of the display, we could barely hear a DVD or CD. An additional speaker or sub-woofer would've given the sound system a much-needed boost.

The one high point of the Aspire 1520 is the 15-inch XGA display. Not only was it incredibly bright, everything on screen was crisp and easy to read. Unfortunately, with such a weak video card, the maximum resolution on our review unit was only 1024 x 768.

Battery life for the Aspire 1520 was not much better. During normal Web surfing and standard office applications, we managed to get 2.5 hours. When the 802.11g Wi-Fi radio was turned off, we got an additional 15 minutes. This is one notebook you'll keep plugged in.

We would recommend the Acer Aspire 1520 only for students or anyone who wants nothing more than a bare-bones, affordable machine to run basic office applications and surf the Web. Power users need not apply.
